Four levels. Where you start depends on what you have finished. Alongside the exams you complete the Ethics and Professional Skills Module and the Practical Experience Requirement to become a full ACCA member.
Foundations in Accountancy / CAT
Seven essential papers, then any two CAT specialist papers.
Applied Knowledge
The three papers everyone knows: business, management accounting, financial accounting.
Applied Skills
Six papers plus the Ethics and Professional Skills Module. BBA and MBA holders often get exemptions here; ask us to check yours.
Strategic Professional
Two essentials, then any two options. Set at the level of a Masters degree.

Applied Knowledge: BT, MA, FA
- Business and Technology (BT): the business environment, its impact on organisations and accountants, and the role of accountants in efficient, effective and ethical organisations.
- Management Accounting (MA): cost and management accounting, cost classification, business mathematics, spreadsheets, budgeting, standard costing and short-term decision making.
- Financial Accounting (FA): financial accounting principles and regulations, double-entry techniques and basic financial statement preparation.
Applied Skills: LW, PM, TX, FR, AA, FM
- Corporate and Business Law (LW): legal systems, obligations, employment law, company formation, capital financing and governance.
- Performance Management (PM): management accounting techniques for planning, decision making, performance evaluation and control.
- Taxation (TX-UK): the UK tax system for individuals and companies, social security contributions, VAT and taxpayer obligations.
- Financial Reporting (FR): accounting standards, financial statements, business combinations, and analysing and interpreting financial statements.
- Audit and Assurance (AA): assurance engagements within the professional regulatory framework: planning, risk assessment, internal control, audit evidence, review and reporting.
- Financial Management (FM): investment, financing and dividend decisions, working capital and business finance.
Strategic Professional: SBL, SBR and the options
- Strategic Business Leader (SBL): technical expertise, ethical awareness and professional skills applied to real-world case studies.
- Strategic Business Reporting (SBR): professional judgement in the preparation and presentation of financial reports, including ethical considerations.
- Options (pick two): Advanced Financial Management (AFM), Advanced Performance Management (APM), Advanced Taxation (ATX-UK), Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA).
CAT: Foundations and the specialist papers
- FA1 Recording Financial Transactions: documents, ledgers, trial balance, banking procedures and error correction.
- MA1 Management Information: costing principles, cost classification, cost recording and spreadsheets.
- FA2 Maintaining Financial Records: double entry, non-current assets, extended trial balance and final accounts for sole traders and partnerships.
- MA2 Managing Costs and Finance: costing techniques, decision making and cash management.
- FBT, FMA, FFA: the Applied Knowledge papers at foundation level.
- Specialists (pick two): Foundation in Taxation (FTX), Foundation in Audit (FAU), Foundation in Financial Management (FFM).
The CAT qualification is nine exams plus a professional ethics module and one year of relevant work experience. No formal qualifications are required to begin, and existing qualifications may earn exemptions.
